Unique in its field, Safepad specialises in high-vis impact protection and has produced an innovative, safe and cost effective solution to a common worksite challenge. Safepad products have been adopted by global companies such as Shell, BHP, ASC, Alcoa and Apache.
The challenge
Organisations face the unavoidable and time-consuming task of masking impact hazards on their sites [include fitting terms here depending on media, e.g. mine sites, vessels and drill rigs etc], to avoid the risk of forceful collision with open ended pipes, scaffolding joints or other jutting, sharp-edged objects. Until now, this has been dealt with using rags and duct tape or paint to draw attention to the hazard. Not only is this time-consuming to apply, but it looks unprofessional and really only highlights the hazard without reducing it’s consequences.
Australian National research shows that impact injuries account for almost a quarter of all work related injuries (2009-2010 statistics). This equates to more than 157,300 people, with over 43% being Lost Time Injuries (LTI’)s and 35% receiving compensation. This cost the Australian economy over $385 million in compensation and downtime as well as clearly compromising staff health and safety.
The solution
Safepad Pty Ltd is a 100% Australian owned and operated company specialising in products designed to reduce the risk of injury from impact hazards. The company was founded in 2010 by two Western Australians. With more than 15 years’ industry experience in engineering and HSE they had direct knowledge of the dynamics of congested industrial work spaces and sought to do something about it. With this in mind, these local entrepreneurs designed a range of highly visible, durable and adaptable protective safety products to cover and mitigate almost any impact hazard.
Safepad products work in two ways:
- Reducing the likelihood of impact by highlighting the hazard through high-vis material
- Reducing the consequences of impact by padding the hazard
The Safepad range includes pads, tube-ends, cylinders and edge protection, all available in various sizes to suit an unlimited variety of applications. Built to function in heavy-duty industrial work environments to the highest quality standards, Safepad products offer flame-retardant and static-resistant materials which have been site-tested in offshore, corrosive and temperature extreme environments. Safepad products have also been proven to substantially reduce worksite costs by reducing labour, saving on materials and preventing injuries.
Safepad products are used on- and offshore in the construction, mining, marine and oil & gas industries across Australia and in South East Asia by contractors and global organisations.
Shahar Bin. Hashim, Director of HSEQ, Sapura Acergy finds Safepad a simple and cost effective solution to protruding hazards in offshore work environments, “I particularly like the way that Safepads allow the crew to have ownership of controlling these types of hazards themselves”. This highly effective innovation is interesting for anybody dealing with HSE challenges and high-vis padded impact protection has potential to set new industry standards in the way we are handling impact hazards on site.
