Crowcon has released handheld and wall-mounted gas detectors for the winemaking industry, designed to sense excess carbon dioxide, oxygen depletion and other gas hazards.
Carbon dioxide, an odourless and colourless gas, is hazardous because it can kill by either causing asphyxiation or poisoning.
This gas is a by-product of the fermentation process in the wine making industry. It is heavier than air, and spills out of the fermenting tanks to form deadly and invisible pockets on the floor of the facility. Workers cleaning out fermentation tanks are also at risk.
The gas detectors are said to be easy to use, lightweight and have a single button operation.
The units can detect up to four of the most commonly found hazardous gases in wineries, including carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and oxygen.
When the devices detect a gas hazard, they produce a loud audible alarm, vibration and a bright red and blue flashing light.
Crowcon products are distributed in Australia by KD Fisher.
