WORKSAFE WA has announced an updated version of its SmartMove safety and health website for young workers.

Since 2004, fifteen young WA workers have died in work-related accidents, while everyday, around ten young workers are seriously injured at workplaces in the WA.

According to the authority, SmartMove is the most popular section of the WorkSafe website, with 50,000 visitors from July to December 2008.

Young people are often at greater risk in workplaces because of their relative inexperience, and sometimes because they may not have the maturity to understand hazards and their potential consequences.

Young workers are also less likely to speak out about workplace hazards, not fully realising that they have a right and a responsible to a safe and healthy workplace.

WorkSafe SmartMove now has a broader content with more interactive features.  It has been updated with the addition of clips, downloads and links to interactive games and videos.

It also has an educational section informing students of the safety hazards in ten different industries.
