WORKSAFE WA will launch a targeted inspection campaign on dusts, fumes and fibres in workplaces in April.
According to WorkSafe WA, dusts, fumes, and fibres are responsible for a significant number of illnesses and deaths. They are particularly problematic because the health effects of exposure to these airborne substances are often not felt until much later.
Additionally, many of these substances are combustible and can cause catastrophic explosions.
WorkSafe WA says the primary aim of the inspection program will be to increase awareness of the hazards and to ensure that appropriate control measures are in place where the hazards are present.
Inspectors will assess if hazardous or combustible dust, fumes or fibres are present in the workplace. If these substances are found, the inspectors will go through a checklist to identify, assess and control them.
WorkSafe WA will be targeting asbestos, laundry powders, diesel exhaust fumes, wood dust, flour and grain dust and silica. Industries to be inspected include automotive repairs, cleaning and laundry services, construction, manufacturing, cabinet making, and food and agriculture.
