WORKSAFE Victoria says employers should be preparing to ensure new summer holiday workers have sufficient training to prevent workplace injuries.
WorkSafe Victoria claims it is worried workers will be put at risk because inadequate attention may be given to the training and supervision of new and young workers in the hospitality, retail, construction and transport/warehousing industries.
According to WorkSafe Victoria, injury risks will rise especially among younger workers who are being brought in to cope with the busy pre-Christmas and New Year period.
WorkSafe’s acting Executive Director, Stan Krpan, says there is a lot to take in when learning a new job.
“Making sure new or young workers clearly understand how to do the job, how to do it safely and that it is ok to ask questions even if they’ve already been told what to do can be a matter of quality-of-life or death,” Mr Krpan said.
WorkSafe’s warning comes with the return of a graphic advertising campaign aimed at young people and their employers.
