WorkSafe Victoria urges safer farms

WORKSAFE Victoria is calling on Victorian farms to ramp up vehicle safety during national Farm Safety Week.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, quad bikes and tractors are common vehicles found in many Victorian farms, but they can be dangerous.

Common farm hazards include using quad bikes without helmets, carrying passengers on the single-driver vehicles, tractors without rollover protection or not applying brakes, unguarded equipment and poor chemical storage.

WorkSafe Victoria says that due to the size and location of farms, if something goes wrong, it could take hours or days for aid to commence.

There have been six work-related farm deaths since January 2009, and injury rates are also said to be very high. WorkSafe Victoria has produced a range of publications about farm safety which can be found online, including ‘All Terrain Vehicles on Farms’, and the ‘15 Minute Farm Safety Checklist’.
