WORKSAFE Victoria has announced the areas it is targeting in the 2009 to 2010 Safe Towns and Safer Work Zones inspection campaigns.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, the safety campaigns target regional and metropolitan areas. Teams of up to ten WorkSafe inspectors will be visiting as many workplaces as possible over one week.

WorkSafe Victoria says the program will aim to help small and medium sized businesses identify basic safety issues to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities, help people who have been hurt to return to work, and ensure businesses have appropriate WorkSafe injury insurance.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, businesses should take note of the early notice. Despite the prior notification, the safety authority says employers often ignore the opportunity to make improvements, leading to safety improvement notices or prohibition notices.

WorkSafe will be focusing on improving the safety of hazardous manual handling, slips, trips and falls, and plant, equipment guarding, return to work, and injury insurance.

In the 2008 to 2009 program, WorkSafe inspectors visited nearly 2000 workplaces, issued 2030 improvement notices, and another 37 prohibition notices.
