WorkSafe fends off Q Fever

WORKSAFE is reminding workers in the livestock and animal handling industry to be screened and vaccinated against Q Fever.

Q Fever is a potentially fatal disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It is transmitted via airborne bacteria and by direct contact with infected animals and materials. Symptoms include high fever, profuse sweating, extreme fatigue and muscle and joint pain.

According to WorkSafe, employees most at risk are abattoir workers, shearers, tanners and stock transport workers, as well as veterinarians and zoo employees.

WorkSafe director, Chris Kirwin, says inspectors will conduct compliance checks to ensure workers are vaccinated in high-risk industries.

Screening is readily available from specifically trained medical practitioners listed on the Australian Q Fever Register website at www.qfever.org.

Further information on Q Fever and other zoonoses can be obtained by telephoning WorkSafe on 9327 8777, or on the website at www.worksafe.wa.gov.au.
