WorkSafe ACT to be established

THE ACT Government will establish WorkSafe ACT, and employ five staff to help in overhauling occupational health and safety regulation in the territory.

According to Attorney General of the ACT Simon Corbell, WorkSafe ACT will function as a branch within the ORS to provide enforcement, education and compliance assurance. It will be led by the Work Safety Commissioner.

The ACT government will invest approximately $2.4m over four years to management structure and enhance the regulatory presence around the ACT. This money will be used to hire additional inspectors and support staff.

  • I hear mixed comments from people telling me that the regulations for working at heights are changing. Some say June 2010 and other think it will be October 2010. That anything over 1.8m on residential buildings will need fall protection/ temporary edge protection. Can you confirm a solid date?. Thanks. Ken Hill SAfe-T-Roof 0427 044 785

  • Ken, changes to these regulations are likely to come with the national harmonisation effort (being driven by Safe Work Australia), if there are indeed to be any changes. They are still in draft form and being negotiated by the various states, however, so there is no authoritative statement on when such changes might come in, or what the nature of these changes will be.
