NT WORKSAFE has released a health and safety alert to remind workers and employers about the potential for fatal electric shock from live electrical equipment such as industrial battery chargers.
A worker was fatally shocked due to inappropriate routing of wiring which allowed 240V mains supply to come in contact with the battery charger DC output on a snap-on fast charger.
According to the alert, the fatality could have been avoided if a residual current device (RCD) had been in use.
The authority has warned workers to always use a portable RCD in conjunction with any portable electrical device, to only use industrial grade extension cords, to regularly inspect and maintain equipment, and to ensure only licensed electricians carry out electrical work.
