THE NATIONAL Transport Commission says if the road freight industry takes up telematics technology, it could improve road safety and reduce costs and emissions.
The Draft National In-Vehicle Telematics Strategy outlines the potential of a partnership approach for the use of telematics technology. The document was developed by the NTC in consultation with governments, industry and unions.
The NTC says it would like to see 90% of the road freight sector voluntarily using in-vehicle technologies by 2030, with information routinely shared between supply chain parties to drive efficiencies and proactively manage fatigue, speed and overloading risks.
According to the NTC, in-vehicle telematics encompasses the electronic monitoring and management of vehicles, their devices and their loads.
The strategy and accompanying documents are open for public comment until 21 July 2010 and can be downloaded on the submissions page of the NTC website.
