THE Workplace Standards Minister has assembled a panel of 20 Tasmanian mining stakeholders and asked them to consider the need for new mining regulations.

The group of 20 academics, regulators, mine managers and Australian Workers Union [http://www.awu.net.au/] officials will report back in October.

According to the Minister, the panel of experts will give Tasmania a head-start when the Federal government starts considering a national scheme.

The academics will inform the panel on best practices in the world. It is hoped representatives from the industry, Government and workers will exchange ideas to create a workable model of mining safety.
