SafeWork SA warns employers against asbestos removal

SAFEWORK SA is warning employers to follow guidelines and laws to safely remove asbestos after a company was penalised for breaching workplace safety regulations.

All Type Earthmoving Contractors was fined $6000 in the Industrial Magistrates Court on 02 December 2008 for removing asbestos without a licence in February 2006.

The company pleaded guilty to three breaches of the ‘Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Regulations 1995’ after a SafeWork SA inspector observed the work being undertaken.

In addition to being unlicensed, the company was penalised for failing to monitor the amount of airborne asbestos released, not providing protective equipment to its employees, and not posting warning signs for asbestos removal.

The conviction follows another asbestos-related incident, where Eco Asbestos Removal Services was fined $13,000 after pleading guilty to regulation breaches in August 2008.
