SPEAKERS at the Queensland Safety Conference will talk about the impact of national OHS laws, as well as swine flu and other hot topics.

Lawyer Jamie McPherson has told the organisers of Queensland Safety Conference that it was vital for Queensland's employers to understand the significance of the national harmonisation of OHS laws.

McPherson is a MVM Legal partner who will address the conference on 18 June 2009. He claims the new National Model OHS Act will completely change the manner in which occupational health and safety is conducted in Queensland.

Key changes include a five-fold increase in the fines and a reversal of the onus of proof. Employers will have a better chance of defence but those found guilty will pay a high price.

Another speaker at the conference is senior director of policy for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, Paul Goldsbrough. He will provide an in-depth comparison of the new model with Queensland's existing Workplace Health and Safety Act.

The Queensland Safety Conference runs from 16 to 18 June 2009 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
