THE COMMONWEALTH, state and territory governments have formalised their cooperation during a Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council (WRMC) meeting in Brisbane at the end of May 2008.

The WRMC expressed their in-principle agreement to the Intergovernmental Agreement for Regulatory and Operational Reform in Occupational Health and Safety (IGA).

Earlier in 2008, the Federal Government set up a panel to review the national model for occupational health and safety laws. It is currently taking public consultations, and will be publishing an issues paper on its findings in June or July.

The meeting also saw an agreement to replace the Australian Safety and Compensation Council with an entity jointly funded by the Commonwealth, states and territories.
