OHS Accreditation Scheme will not apply to some stimulus building works

AS OF 18 May 2009, some building works funded under the Nation Building and Jobs Plan do not require the application of the Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme.

The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner says the changes to the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme are due to the need to accelerate the flow of the economic stimulus measures to areas of need.

These changes are only applicable to certain projects funded by the $42b Nation Building and Jobs Plan in the Updated Economic and Fiscal Outlook of 5 February 2009 (Appendix B).

The OHS Accreditation Scheme will continue to apply to Australian Government funded building work outside of the Nation Building and Jobs Plan. It will also apply to the new funding for building work announced as part of the Commonwealth Budget on 12 May 2009.

According to the FSC, the changes do not compromise the high safety standards needed to gain OHS accreditation. Building work funded under Nation Building and Jobs Plan will continue to be subject to the relevant state or territory health and safety laws.
