Day 3 of Safe Work Week will highlight workplace safety with sessions on managing depression, safety on the railways and the management of bariatric patents.
beyondblue and WorkCoverSA will examine depression from a workplace perspective, and the significant impact it can have on productivity.
The presenters will examine:
• The most commonly occurring mental health problems.
• Their impact on individuals, the workplace environment and the organisation as a whole.
• Principles and planning required approaching and assisting an affected employee.
• Management responsibilities to employees and the organisation.
According to Safe Work, a prominent issue for nursing and allied health staff is the escalating nature of hazardous manual tasks associated with caring for obese/bariatric patients.
These tasks require significant and often individualised risk controls and patient management solutions. The issue will be examined in a one–day forum for the health and community services sector presented by SafeWork SA in partnership with SA Health and Employers Mutual SA.
University of South Australia academics, Professor Verna Blewett, Dr Sophia Rainbird, Dr Jill Dorrian and Dr Jessica Paterson will report on their research into the Australian rail industry, aimed at producing a best practice model for safety culture in the industry.
The research has obtained is reportedly in–depth information about day–to–day operations, decision–making and how the factors that affect health and safety are identified and managed.
Other sessions today will deal with key transitional aspects of the Work Health and Safety (SA) Bill.
Safe Work Week 2011 is being held at the Education Development Centre, Milner Street Hindmarsh.
The event is presented by the SafeWork SA Advisory Committee in partnership with SafeWork SA, Business SA, SA Unions and WorkCoverSA.
