BHP Billiton says it is assessing damages after its Nelson Point port facilities on the Port Hedland harbour caught on fire on 13 March 2008.

The company says the fire started in the lump screening area and was extinguished by fire crews.

The screening area scans the quality of the iron ore which are transported by rail from the company’s Pilbara mines. It is the final step before stockpiling the ore for export.

BHP will be looking at the effect of the fire on its operations.

According to the company, there were no evacuations and no injuries.
