A SYDNEY-based manufacturing company has been fined $35,000 after a worker was injured at its Carol Park factory in May 2007.

Tyco Water was prosecuted by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. It pleaded guilty to breaching section 24 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995, having failed to ensure workplace safety.

An employee for the company, unaware of another worker’s presence nearby, had started a conveyor to move a pipe from one area to another.

The moving pipe struck the employee who was sweeping the floor between two rotators of the pipe conveyor. He suffered crush injuries to his left leg.

Following the incident, the company installed swing gates and light curtains to prevent future reoccurrences.

In addition to the $35,000 fine, the company was ordered to pay investigation, professional and court costs of $2815.40.
