Burns incident highlights dangers of flammable liquids

WORKCOVER NSW says an incident at South Windsor on 15 July served as an unfortunate reminder of the dangers of working with flammable liquids.

A worker at the manufacturing plant had 40% of his body burned while working with flammable thinners.

Initial investigation from WorkCover indicate the 25-year-old was decanting the flammable liquid when a spill ignited, severely burning him.

WorkCover NSW has warned of the dangers of working with flammable liquids, especially in enclosed spaces, since even in small quantities, they can ignite and cause considerable damage and severe burns to workers.

As such, spills and leaks should be contained and removed as soon as possible to reduce the risk of ignition.

Work should be done in well-ventilated areas to avoid the build-up of flammable vapours, and liquids should be handled outside and away from storage areas.

Ignition sources should also be kept away from flammable liquids.
