AWU urges government to pass CPRS laws

THE AUSTRALIAN Workers Union (AWU) says it hopes Federal parliament will pass the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) by 27 November 2009.

AWU National Secretary Paul Howes says the union has been active in national debate over the scheme because many of its members are employed in front line industries affected by new CPRS laws.

"Early in this process, when the White Paper was released, the AWU expressed some concerns, but we are now comfortable that workers in the emissions intensive and trade exposed industries will be protected."

AWU claims the majority its 135,000 members are employed in industries on the front line of the environmental debate.
