Australian Logistics Council launches National Logistics Safety Code

THE AUSTRALIAN Logistics Council (ALC) has launched its National Logistics Safety Code (NLSC), an industry-led code which sets out the responsibilities for players in the convoluted logistics safety environment.

According to the Australian Logistics Council, the NLSC takes a holistic approach to safety, unifying the complex rules and regulations.

While the NLSC is not designed to replace any existing code, it is designed as an umbrella for these codes. The retail and steel codes have already been incorporated, and more will follow.

The ALC says BlueScope, Toll, Linfox, Metcash, Coles, Woolworths and the TWU helped develop the NLSC, and these organisations have endorsed the code. Companies can apply with the ALC to become signatories to the code.

The NLSC covers the issues of legal compliance, occupational health and safety risk assessment and compliance, fatigue management, communication, safe loading, speed management, equipment, drive health, drug and alcohol free workplaces, subcontractor assessments and operational infrastructure.
