Miner killed at BHP Port Hedland site

A 27 year-old man has been crushed to death at BHP Billiton’s iron ore loading facility at Finucane Island in Port Hedland.

The man was killed shortly after midnight after a loaded crane collapsed and fell on him, according to The West.

The unnamed man, who is working as a contractor on the site, was reportedly hit while standing alone on a small platform.

Sergeant Tony Ferguson, of the South Hedland police, said it is too early to say what caused the crane to fall, but the incident will be the subject of an inquiry by the Department of Mines and Petroleum and Worksafe.
