WORKSAFE says a major quarry company which operates in Victoria and Queensland has been convicted and fined $650,000 after the death of a worker in 2005.

According to WorkSafe, the Barro Group was found guilty of failing to provide a safe system of work and failing to provide adequate instruction, training or supervision to its employees.

WorkSafe claims a jury was told a worker was changing a 1.3t steel liner on a rock crusher when it fell from its mounts crushing him at Barro’s Donnybrook quarry, north of Melbourne, in July 2005.

The Judge says any proper hazard identification would have resulted in a re-assessment of the system for changing the steel jaw liners.
